Abstract
Heat resistant bodies of molybdenum disilicide are produced by mixing the finely divided disilicide with 0.2-20% by weight of a finely divided plastic clay of the montmorillonite group suspended in a polar liquid such as water, shaping the mixture, sintering at 1000-1400 DEG C and then heating in the presence of oxygen at about 1600 DEG C. Clay, which may be bentonite, is preferably used in an amount depending inversely on the grain size of the silicide which should be less than 10 microns. The silicide may be mixed and kneaded under vacuum with bentonite and water, extruded to rods pre-sintered under pure hydrogen at 1000 DEG C, and sintered at 1200-1400 DEG C under pure hydrogen after which the rods have a porosity of 15-20%. The rods are then heated for a few minutes in air at 1600 DEG C. At this temperature the rods may be subjected to a shaping operation. The product has a porosity of 0-5%. A typical bentonite used has the composition 60% SiO2, 20% Al2O3, 15% H2O and 5% impurities. The final product may have a composition 57.7% Mo, 34.9% Si, 0.7% Al, 0.7% Fe, 5.8% O and 0.2% impurities
