Abstract

848,841. Confining dust generated in industrial processes. HOLMAN BROS. Ltd. May 23, 1958 [May 24, 1957], No. 16570/57. Addition to 780,761. Class 8(2). A dust-confining cowl 10, Fig. 1, for use with a flat grinding wheel 11 or other tool throwing dust radially outwardly over the face of a workpiece is at least partly surrounded by an annular suction duct 16 having one or more peripherally arranged suction inlets 24 formed in a radially outwardly facing part of the inner or outer wall of the duct 16 close to the workpiece (not shown) and through which suction air is drawn in a radially inward direction and which entrains dust thrown radially outwardly between the duct 16 and the workpiece. As shown the bottom edge 18 of the cowl skirt 14 is flared outwardly and a single arcuate suction inlet slot 24 formed between the edge 18 and the bottom of the duct wall 19 decreases in width as it approaches a central suction outlet 22, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a modification and openended cowl 42, Fig. 4, surrounds an iron-powderinjection oxy-acetylene profile flame cutter 40 and the burner edge of the skirt portion 46 is turned radially outwardly to form with the lower edge of the outer wall 48 of the suction duct 47 a peripheral suction slot 49.
