Abstract

Process for preparing vinyl alcohol-acrylic ester copolymers comprises treating with an alkali metal hydroxide an aqueous alcoholic solution obtained by addition of a watermiscible alcohol to an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and an acrylic ester containing not less than one part by weight of vinyl acetate per part by weight of acrylic ester, and thereby effecting hydrolysis of the vinyl acetate units of the copolymer. The acrylic ester may be an alkyl acrylate in which the alkyl group contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate. The aqueous copolymer dispersion may be prepared by emulsifying the monomers in an aqueous medium with the aid of partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, adding thereto an aqueous solution of an alkali metal carbonate and an alkali metal persulphate, and polymerising. The watermiscible alcohol may be methanol, ethanol or butanol. Solutions of the copolymer products may be mixed with sulphonated methyl oleate, or wax emulsions comprising paraffin wax, light mineral oil, stearic acid and triethyanolamine, and used for sizing textile yarns.ALSO:Textile yarns, e.g. of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyesters, polyamides or polymers of acrylonitrile, are sized with compositions comprising aqueous solutions of vinyl alcohol-acrylic ester copolymers prepared (see Group IV(a)) by treating with an alkali metal hydroxide an aqueous alcoholic solution obtaned by adding a water-miscible alcohol to an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and an acrylic ester containing not less than one part by weight of vinyl acetate per part of acrylic ester, and thereby effecting hydrolysis of the vinyl acetate units of the copolymer. Examples describe the sizing, prior to weaving, of (3) polyethylene terephthalate yarns with aqueous compositions comprising a hydrolised vinyl acetate-ethyl acrylate copolymer and (a) sulphonated methyl oleate and (b and c) emulsions of paraffin wax, light mineral oil, stearic acid and triethanolamine; and (4) nylon filaments with a size having the constituents specified in 3(b) and (c).
