Abstract

1335919 Aqueous dispersions containing ethylene copolymers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 19 April 1971 [16 Feb 1970] 21906/71 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] An aqueous dispersion useful for coating or impregnating and flame proofing polyester textile materials comprises (1) from 20 to 95% by weight of an ethylene copolymer comprising at least 30% by weight of copolymerized ethylene and not more than 70% by weight of at least one copolymerized polar monomer, (2) from 5 to 80% by weight of a halogenated alkyl phosphate and (3) from 0 to 25% by weight of a finely divided particulate filler, dispersed in water, the percentage of components (1), (2) and (3) being based on the total weight of such components. The dispersion should have a high solids content of 40 to 70% by weight but is generally diluted down to 15 to 40% solids when applied as a coating on the fabric. It may be coalesced into films by removal of the aqueous medium either at room temperature or at elevated temperature up to 180‹ C. The copolymerized polar monomer may be derived from a vinyl ester of a carboxylic acid, an unsaturated carboxylic acid, a halogenated vinyl compound e.g. vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride, vinyl alcohol (hydrolysed vinyl acetate), acrylamide, #-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate or #-hydroxyethyl acrylate or other acrylic or methacrylic esters e.g. methyl methacrylate or ethyl- or isobutyl-acrylate. The preferred halogenated alkyl phosphate is tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate. Preferred copolymers are those derived from ethylene, vinyl acetate and/or an alpha-beta unsaturated carboxylic acid. The finely divided particulate filler may be a clay or other mineral silicate, a metal oxide, metal carbonate, metal phosphate or metal borate and/or an organic or inorganic pigment. The polyester fabric may be derived from various specified polyester fibres, polyethylene terephthalate fabric being used in the Examples. A wax and a surfactant having an HLB number greater than 18 may also be included in the aqueous dispersion and any carboxylic groups present in the copolymer may be neutralized or partly neutralized by alkali metal ions, e.g. Na<SP>+</SP> or K<SP>+</SP>.
