Abstract

2:4 Dinitroresorcinol is prepared by heating resorcinol with excess of concentrated sulphuric acid, cooling the solution of sulphonic acids so obtained, adding an amount of concentrated nitric acid slightly in excess of 2:1 mols per mol of resorcinol while keeping the temperature at 20 to 25 DEG C, adding water, then separating any undissolved matter, and then refluxing at 130 to 135 DEG C., there being present sulphuric acid in an amount greater than 10 times the weight of resorcinol originally used.
