Abstract

A filament of transparent material has a coating which extends continuously along the length of the filament but transversely around only a part of the filament. The filament may be made of glass, and may have any cross-section, e.g. circular, oval, oblong or ribbon-like. The coating, which should produce a reflective interface with the filament, may be of metal such as Al, Al alloy, Sn, Cr, Pt, Ag, Pb, Ni, Au, Cu, Cd, Bi, As, Sb, Rh, Zn, and may be applied by (1) depositing molten metal from an applicator (Figs. 1-5, not shown), (2) vacuum evaporation (Fig. 6, not shown), (3) spraying, (4) gas-plating, the filament being provided with a temporary partial coating before plating and the temporary coating and metal deposited thereon being subsequently removed or (5) electroplating (see Group XXXVI). The coated filaments may be gathered together in the form of a strand or yarn, and coated with a transparent or translucent plastic, e.g. a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride.
