Abstract
A flexible filament comprises a glass base, a metal coating thereon and a lubricant layer over the metal coating. The metal coating may be Al, Bi, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Co, Ni, Au, Ag, Ce, Fe, Cd, Ga, Ir, Pt, Sn, W, Sb, Ti, Te, Ta, Pd, Mo, In, Mn or alloys thereof, e.g. solder, Wood's metal, brass, bronze stainless steel or a Zn-Ti alloys containing 0.5-3 per cent Ti. The coating may be applied by dipping or vapour deposition. The lubricant may be an alkane having more than 15 C atoms; cetyl, carnaubul, ceryl or melissyl alcohol; lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, carnaubic, cerotic or oleic acid; a non-volatile ester or ethers; an orgaanosiloxane; or a metallic sulphate, oxide, sulphide, carbonate or soap. The lubricant may be applied by spraying, dipping, brushing or chemical conversion of the surface of the metallic coating to oxide by exposure to oxygen. The coated filaments may be twisted into a cord or fabricated into cloth by weaving, knitting or braiding, or into a weftless fabric, or built up into rubberized cloth or cords for building into rubber tyres or conveyer belts.
