Abstract

A flexible yarn comprises flexible glass fibres individually coated with metal, the metal coating of an individual fibre maintaining such fibre free from glass-to-glass contact with other fibres, and the individual coated fibres being distinct components of the yarn capable of relative movement with respect to adjacent fibres. The coating may be applied by vapour deposition and may consist of Al, Bi, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Co, Ni, Au, Ag, Ce, Fe, Ir, Pt, Sn, W, Sb, Ti, Ta, Pd, Mo, In, Mn, Te, or alloys thereof, solder, Wood's metal, brass, bronze or stainless steel. The surface of the metal coating may be coloured. The yarn may be made into fabric by weaving, knitting or brading, or made into a weftless fabric, or twisted into cord. Vaporization of the coating metal may be effected in an alumina coated conical container formed by spiralling a tungsten wire through which current is passed.
