Class 143 In a weighing apparatus comprising a beam 1 on which the load acts in one direction and is counterbalanced by a weight 4, spring or the like tending to rotate the beam in the other direction, balance of the beam is effected by varying the point of application of the weight 4 and on the beam 1 by displacement of a transmission member 9 along said beam without displacing the weight 4 per se, the member 9 transmitting a constant force due to the weight 4 whatever its position along the beam, and the displacing force being an outside force, not furnished directly by the out of balance of the beam, which does not per se exert any reaction forces on the beam. As shown the weight 4 is supported on a vertical arm 5 of a parallelogram linkage 5, 7, 8, the arm 5 having a lateral extension 6 parallel to the beam 1 and providing an upper track for a carriage 9 which has rollers 10, 11 bearing respectively on the extension 6 and the beam 1. The carriage 9 is carried at one end of a rack 12 operable by a pinion 14 to move the carriage along the beam. The pinion 14 may be operated by an electric, pneumatic, hydraulic or like motor controlled by the out of balance condition of the beam in known manner. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement wherein the balance weight 4 is suspended by a spring 30 from one end of a plate 29 which is pivotally anchored at its other end to overlie the beam 1, the undersurface of the plate forming the upper track for the carriage 9. A dashpot 33, 34 may be associated with the weight 4.
