Abstract

1,029,890. Counterbalancing. CONGO EN GINEERING WORKS Inc. Dec. 19, 1963, No. 50261/63. Heading B8B. Apparatus for counterbalancing a load 81. Fig. 1, such as a power tool supported by an overhead carriage 14, 20 running on rails 36, comprises a parallelogram linkage system 12, 64, 68, 77 arranged with the lower generally horizontal member 64 rotatable on its axis XX in bearing 60 which is pivoted to the carriage on a horizontal axis ZZ and carries the loadsupporting member 77 on a pivoted axis YY at its end. The counterweight 74 is mounted above the XX axis and behind the ZZ axis relative to the load 81 so that a balance is maintained for movements of the load 81 about all three axes XX, YY, ZZ. The carriage 14, 20 may be driven by a motor 90 which is servo-controlled from a valve 84 actuated by sideways movements of the power tool 81 through a linkage 96, 98 when the member 64 rotates about the XX axis. In a modification the counterweight may comprise two parts 163, 169, Fig. 3 (not shown), one part 163 being fixedly mounted on a vertical member 162 for counterbalancing the system when unloaded, and the other part 169 for counterbalancing the power tool &c. being pivotable on an axis 161 so that it may be swung to an ineffective position. An hydraulic actuator 172 attached to the member 162 may be used to swing the weight 119 between the two positions. In a further modification the main support member 224, Fig. 12 (not shown), may be longitudinally adjustable in its bearing 220 as by screw nuts 246, 248 for adjusting the balance. The counterweight 238 may also be readily interchangeable and vertically adjustable on a threaded bolt 236.
