Abstract

845,835. Suction devices for handling articles. MILLARS MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Jan. 21, 1959 [Nov. 11, 1958], No. 36168/58. Class 78 (4). A suction-cup 10 is connected to suction through a valve 15, 16 only when engagement of the cup with an article permits a leak past the valve to equalize the pressures on either side of the valve. As illustrated, the valve comprises a disc 15 engaging a seat 16 and carried by a hollow stem 14 providing a leak which can be adjusted by a screw-plug 18. Thus if several such cups are connected to a common suction source, any of the cups not engaged by the load will have their valves 15, 16 closed by the pressure drop across the valve so that the loss of suction will be reduced. The Specification shows an arrangement of the cups 10 for lifting a sheet in which the cups are suspended singly and in pairs from a single pipe conveying the suction.
