Abstract

Adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) from any mammalian pituitary tissue, especially ovine and bovine ACTH, is enhanced in potency especially as manifested upon subcutaneous administration, by treatment with pyridoxine or a mineral acid salt thereof, preferably pyridoxine hydrochloride, present in a concentration from 0,005% to 10% weight/volume, preferably 1%, at a temperature which may be from 15 DEG C. to 150 DEG C., preferably 90 DEG C.-100 DEG C., at a pH from 3,5 to 5,5, preferably 4,7 to 4,8, which may be obtained by agents such as hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer. Gelatin and p preservatives such as propyl or methyl parahydroxybenzoate or phenol may be added before or after treatment and an organic reducing agent containing at least one sulphhydryl group such as cysteine, b -mercaptoethanol or thioglycollic acid may be added to stabilize the pyridoxine-treated ACTH. Specification 845,704 is referred to.
