845,540. Cartonning apparatus. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH) Ltd. April 28, 1958 [Jan. 29, 1957], No. 3065/57. Class 94(1). Cartons 11, in pockets 12 of a conveyer 13, approach a folding station with their inner end closure tabs 14 extending transversely of the conveyer. Above the conveyer are folding blades 22 that rotate to engage each trailing tab 14 and fold it in the forward direction of the conveyer 13, each leading tab 14 being then folded in the rearward direction by a stationary folder 27. The conveyer 13 and the blades 22 may be driven by a common Geneva mechanism, the arrangement being such that for each intermittent movement, the conveyer 13 moves a distance equal to two pitches of the pockets 12 and the shaft 19 rotates once to cause the trailing tabs 14 of two cartons to be folded forwardly by the two blades 22. An outer flap 16 is finally ploughed over onto the end of the carton and this outer flap may be held in position by tucking in an end tab when provided. At appropriate stations the cartons are filled two 'at a time during a rest period. During such periods partly erected cartons are fed two at a time onto the conveyer. The closure portions at the other end of the carton may be folded simultaneously on the opposite side of the conveyer or at some other station.
