Abstract
845,025. Centrifugal pumps. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. April 28, 1958 [May 20, 1957], No. 16004/57. Class 110 (1). A pumping arrangement for handling liquid hydrogen comprises a pump, gas-type refrigeration means using hydrogen as the working gas wherein the hydrogen gas is expanded to be supercooled, and heat exchange means through which the liquid hydrogen and hydrogen gas pass so that the liquid hydrogen is cooled just prior to entry into the pump. Liquid hydrogen flowing to a centrifugal pump 10 is cooled to a small extent in a heat exchanger 13 immediately before entering the pump, for the purpose of preventing cavitation at the eye of the pump due to boiling. Gaseous hydrogen is used as the coolant, and after leaving the heat exchanger 13 it is circulated by a blower 14 through a heat exchanger 15, in which it is cooled by the liquid hydrogen leaving the pump 10, and is supercooled in an expansion turbine 17 before returning to the heat exchanger 13. Pump 10 is driven by the turbine 17, and the blower 14 is driven by an external power source.
