In a stator winding machine with a wire feed head reciprocated in the stator bore, the wire is guided from the side edges of members mounted on the core support into the slots by a guide of approximately triangular form having its apex extending away from the core. As shown in Fig. 2, the spindle of wire feed head 11 is axially fixed relative to sleeve 24 but angularly movable therein by an amount determined by the slot in fixed sleeve 20<SP>1</SP>, sleeve 24 carrying a slotted bar 22 engaged by a pin 21 on arm 26 whereby reciprocations of the head are produced by shaft 34 driven normally through dog clutch 29 or if desired by hand wheel 31. The shaft 34 also carries a cam with a slot 32 shaped to impart angular motion to the stator support 3 via a cam follower 35, rocker arm 37 on a pivot 39, link 44, rack 46 and gears 6, 47. The pivot 39 is adjustable as the extent of the angular movement depends on the lengths of the two parts of the rocker arm. The wire is guided into the slots by guides 13, 14 mounted on the end faces of the stator holder 14 being a plate removably mounted on each side of the stator and 13 a bent wire loop extending away from the end face of the stator with its tip lying close to the stator axis, the tip being within the limit of the stroke of the feed head 11.
