Abstract

Oil-soluble copolymers derived from maleic anhydride, an alkyl ester of an alpha-beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, and a copolymerizable alkylene ester of a C1-C6 monocarboxylic acid are obtained by copolymerizing at a temperature above 70 DEG C. in the presence of a free radical catalyst which decomposes at a temperature above 70 DEG C. The preferred alpha-beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid is fumaric acid although maleic or itaconic acids may be used. The alkylene ester is preferably vinyl acetate but allyl derivatives may be used. The catalyst may be tertiary butyl perbenzoate, tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, 2, 2 bis (ter-butyl-peroxy butane), di-tertiary-butyl peroxide or di-cumyl peroxide. The catalyst may be used in the form of an oil solution or slurry, and the reaction is preferably carried out under nitrogen. The reaction is carried out for a period of time to copolymerize the reactants but not for long enough to form an insoluble gel. The product may be added to hydrocarbon fuel or lubricating oils. In an example, 4% of maleic anhydride, 2% of lauryl alcohol (as reaction modifier) 18,8% of vinyl acetate and 75,2% of lauryl fumarate were copolymerized, either at 60 DEG C. using 1% benzoyl peroxide as catalyst or at 95 DEG C. using 0,4% tertiary butyl perbenzoate. Specification 807,737 is referred to.ALSO:Oil-soluble copolymers derived from maleic anhydride, an alkyl ester of an alpha-beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, and a copolymerizable alkylene ester of a C1-C6 monocarboxylic acid obtained by copolymerizing at a temperature above 70 DEG C. in the presence of a free radical catalyst which decomposes at a temperature above 70 DEG C. (see Group IV(a)) may be added to lubricating or fuel oils. The lubricating oils may be mineral, vegetable, animal, or synthetic oils especially those comprising complex esters or diesters. The fuel oils may be diesel oils, gas oils or kerosenes. Oil-soluble sulphonates, metal salts of alkyl phenol sulphides, and extreme-pressure, antiwear and anti-oxidant additives may also be used.
