Abstract

1,235,961. Lubricants; fuels. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 24 April, 1969 [26 April, 1968], No. 21036/69. Headings C5F and C5G. [Also in Division C3] Oil-soluble copolymers suitable for use as additives in oil compositions comprise units of one or more alkyl esters of ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids (preferably methacrylic acid) all or the major proportion of which is one or more alkyl esters in which each alkyl radical comprises a group of the formula CH 3 -(CH 2 )n-, where n is greater than 8 and in which the average number of carbon atoms in the said groups is between 12À5 and 14À3, and units of one or more monohydroxy alkyl esters of ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids (preferably acrylic or methacrylic acid), wherein for every 10 units derived from the alkyl esters 0À25 to 5 units are derived from the monohydroxy alkyl esters. The copolymers may also include units of alkyl esters of ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids that are different from those defined above. The copolymers can be added to mineral or synthetic lubricating oils, greases, fuel oils, kerosenes and gasolines. They are particularly suitable as lubricant additives, serving as VI-improvers, dispersants and pour-point depressants, generally in proportions of from 0À1-10% by weight of the lubricant composition. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,052,924.
