Abstract

844,527. Textile centrifugal spinning. GARDELLA, A., and GARDELLA, C. Jan. 24, 1958 [Jan. 28, 1957], No. 3047/57. Classes 120(1) and 120(2). To give the sliver the necessary initial twist for starting, or for restarting after accidental breakage or doffing, a vertical rotatable guide-tube 31, Fig. 1, is positioned near the drafting-device 127 to receive sliver moving downwardly therefrom; means, such as a helical rib 37 are provided in the tube for twisting the sliver extending therethrough in the same direction as the tube rotates, and the can 1, Fig. 2, which is disposed coaxially of the tube to receive the sliver emanating from its lower end, has openings 26 centrally of its bottom through which end the tube air is caused to flow downwardly by means such as a fan 227. The tube 31 is mounted in a bushing 33 to be rotatable by a pulley 131 in the same direction as the can 1 which is mounted in bushings 4, 5 is rotated by a pulley 8. At its lower end the tube telescopes into a tube 39 depending into the: can from a member 40 which can be reciprocated to form the cheese. The bottom of the can is closed by a plate 11 resiliently mounted in a movable support 12. The tube 31 is rotated continuously or only when it is required to start or restart spinning; a length of sliver in the tube, newly-introduced or remaining after breakage, is twisted through contact with the rib 37; as the cam is rotated linings 23a, 24 between the can and its closure engage centrifugally to give a tight joint which is strenghtened as the cheese forms and engages headed members 25. The joints at the top of the can and at 33 and 40 being substantially air-tight and bellows 47, 48 being provided, air is drawn through the apertures 60 by the fan 227, and material F continues to be drawn into the tube 31. The tube 39 is freely rotatable in its bearings to prevent back-coiling from the cheese when free passage of the material is obstructed. It is however braked by a member 43 to prevent it rotating in normal working. A stop-mechanism for the drafting-device operable if the sliver fails properly to enter the tube 31, consists of a feeler 49 on an arm of a lever 50 of which the other arm normally supports a link 54 maintaining a pawl 51 out of engagement with a rotating wheel 53. When material builds up against the feeler, the lever 50 is moved to the right and the link 54 falls to allow a weight 50 to move the pawl to stop the wheel 53 and thus to stop the drafting-mechanism. For doffing, the material is severed between the rollers and the can by stopping the drafting mechanism.
