[Also in Group XL(b)] In apparatus for detecting shortage of weft in a shuttle 22, the beam 20 from a light source 10 mounted on a loom frame 16 is so directed that it does not illuminate a photo-electric cell 24 when the relevant shuttle box 18 is empty; when the shuttle is in the box, a prism 28 in the front wall of the shuttle 22 refracts the beam through a hole in the rear wall of the shuttle so that it impinges on the photo-electric cell unless there is sufficient weft in the shuttle to interrupt the beam.
