Abstract

885,287. Valve gating circuits. GUNSON (SEEDS) Ltd., R. W. Dec. 11, 1958 [Oct. 20, 1958], No. 13418/61. Divided out of 885,283. Class 40(6). [Also in Group XL(b)] In a sorting machine the object 2 to be sorted is illuminated by infra-red and visible light. Light reflected from the object passes through the aperture in a diaphragm 55, this aperture being larger than that in a second diaphragm 56. It is arranged that diaphragm 56 transmits only infra-red light except at the aperture, where it transmits visible light only. The visible light passes via a part-silvered mirror 53<SP>1</SP> to a photo-electric viewing means 4<SP>1</SP> whose output feeds an amplifier 59. A valve 61 acts as a gate. When no object 2 is being examined the gate is shut because the grid/cathode is in effect short-circuited by a pair of diodes 67, 68 and low value resistors 64, 65. However, when an object 2 is present infra-red light from the object passes through an infra-red filter 57 to a photocell 58. The cell output is amplified at 62 and feeds a phase splitter 63 so that the grid/cathode circuit is again made and a signal coming from amplifier 59 is amplified by valve 61 to control the sorting operation. The valve 61 will be opened before a signal arrives from amplifier 59 because, as the object 2 falls through the inspection zone, light will strike the infrared transmitting portion of diaphragm 56 before it strikes the visible light transmitting portion. Similarly, the valve will not be shut again until after amplifier 59 has ceased to give a signal. Specifications 885,285 and 885,286 are referred to.
