[Also in Group XL (b)] The images of the template and the workpiece in a copying machine are projected simultaneously on to the photo-cathode of a television camera tube, so that any lack of register produces an area having a distinct light intensity or hue, which produces pulse signals when the tube is scanned. The images are combined either by means of a partially reflecting mirror, Fig. 1 (not shown, or a prism, Fig. 4 (not shown). It is stated that the two objects are illuminated so as to contrast with their backgrounds. At the same time the light intensity due to the two images in coincidence is made equal to the light intensity due to images of the two backgrounds which are also being projected on to the photocathode. It is suggested that object and background could be in contrasting colours. The electrical output of the camera tube may either be displayed on a television receiver or used to control the position of the grinding wheel of a copying machine in which a single line is scanned at the working point and the grinding wheel is advanced or retracted in an undisclosed way according to the presence or absence of a pulse. It is stated that the control signals for the whole process can first be stored and then read out.
