Abstract

A method of producing gold alloy deposits of a pale yellow colour consists in electro-depositing a thick and adherent gold-copper alloy plating on a metal base and thereafter causing a whitening metal to penetrate by thermal diffusion into the said gold-copper alloy plating. Whitening metals are silver, zinc, cadmium, caesium, rubidium and selenium. Thermal diffusion of the white metal into the gold-copper alloy may be effected by the following methods:-(i) plunging the alloy plating into a melt of the white metal, removing it therefrom, and then heating under pressure, (ii) covering the alloy plating electrolytically with a thin coating of white metal and then heating under pressure, (iii) spraying liquid particles of white metal on to the alloy plating in a vacuum and then heating under pressure, (iv) exposing the alloy plating under reduced pressure to the vapour of the white metal by holding it over a vessel containing molten white metal, (v) placing the alloy plated articles in a drum in contact with powdered white metal and subjecting to heat and rotation. Examples disclose the treatment of an article, coated with gold-copper alloy, by dipping in molten cadmium; electrodepositing a thin layer of zinc; and heating with zinc or selenium powder.
