Abstract

844,254. Submarine hydrofoil vessels. KORGANOFF, A. June 3, 1957 [June 1, 1956], No. 17558/57. Classes 113 and 114. A submarine has hydrofoils mounted for movement to a position extended from the underside of the hull and to a retracted position for stowing in the hull. In the embodiment shown, hydrofoils 11 are mounted on axles 12, on uprights 7, 8 pivoted at 9 and 10, the uprights being equipped with vertical stabilisers or rudders 17, 18 controlled by shafts 19 to assist the rudder 4 of the vessel which has horizontal stabilisers 6 and is propelled by reaction engines 2 with nozzle outlets 3. Shafts 13 and 14 at the extremities of the hydrofoils 11 support ailerons or "hydrons" 15, 16 which may be made to move together to co-ordinate the action with that of the horizontal stabilisers 6, or be made to move in opposing directions to cause the vessel to pivot on its longitudinal axis. Gears, chain drives, or other means may be provided to alter the distance between the hydrofoils simultaneously, those on the uprights 7 and those on the uprights 8 being adjusted separately or in synchronization, as well as to alter the extension of each hydrofoil assembly 7, 8 underneath the vessel. The hydrofoils may have nozzle outlets connected with the outlets of the reaction engines.
