Class 72 A wire treating device wherein the wire is electrically preheated, heated, quenched, and reheated for drying, comprises a pair of shafts extending parallel to each other a plurality of sheaves mounted on each shaft, and slip rings applying a voltage across selected pairs of sheaves whereby a wire passing successively over them has a predetermined current passed through it to heat it to a desired temperature. Wire passes successively over sheaves 62, 52, 68, 42, 76. 32 and 82 and leaves the machine by passing over pulley 96. Sheaves 32, 42 and 52 and sheaves 62, 68, 76 and 82 are mounted respectively on shafts 16 and 24, being suitably insulated from said shafts so that they may be electrically connected with the aid of brushes and slip rings as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 4. Current supplied by the secondary of transformer T1 preheats the wire between sheaves 62 and 42 while the same voltage is applied to the wire between pulleys 42 and 76 heating it to a much higher temperature while surrounded by a protective atmosphere of steam in tube 90. Between sheaves 76 and 32 the wire is heated from transformer T2 and at the same time quenched with water in tube 88 after which it is dried by an equal voltage between sheaves 32 and 82 and then passes to a coiler over pulley 96.
