Abstract
Steel rails are caused to traverse a zone wherein the head is heated and are simultaneously cambered by an amount sufficient to equalize the thermal contraction resulting from the subsequent quenching. Cambering may be effected by the weight of the rail on either side of the heating zone in conjunction with an upwardly acting camber roll. Rails may be joined into strings before heat treatment and a number of strings may be treated in parallel, the joints being staggered. The rate of quenching is such that martensite formation is avoided. Suitable apparatus is described and illustrated.
