Abstract

Inductor for the unifrom surface heating of a round metal piece with a dia. which varies continuously and/or discontinuously, and is continuously rotated on its axis of symmetry inside the inductor. The inductor possesses several pairs of conductors which are parallel with the surface of the piece and fed with a.c. The conductors are fitted with cores consists of U-shaped stacks of ferromagnetic laminations which surround the conductors on three sides. At least two pairs of conductors are located symmetrically round the workpiece, and the ends of the legs of each U-core follow the profile of the workpiece. Several cores are fitted on each conductor, and the cores are staggered so that the cores on two adjacent conductors cover all the surface to be heated during rotation of the workpiece. The conductors are pref. connected in parallel. Used e.g. for the surface heating of ferromagnetic workpiece which is then quenched, the inductor being more efficient than conventional inductors so heating is more rapid.
