Abstract

844,157. Hooks. ALEXANDRA TOWING CO. Ltd. May 24, 1957 [May 24, 1956], No. 16040/56. Class 89(2) In a tripping mechanism for a tow hook, a hook 10 pivoted at 13 between side plates 16 is interconnected to a tripping lever 12 pivoted at 15 between the side plates 16 by a link 11 similarly pivoted at 15, the hook having a swivel block 17 engaging in a recess 18 in the link 11 which is formed with a flat surface 20 engaging a swivel block 19 on the tripping lever 12, the surface 20 being at right angles to the line joining the pivots of the swivel block 19 and the lever 12 so that the towing force on the hook does not produce a turning moment on the tripping lever. A spring pressed locking bolt 23 in the tripping lever 12 engages a recess 25 in the link 11 and may be released by pulling a wire 28 attached to the outer end of a bell crank lever 26 connected to the bolt 23, continued pulling rotating the tripping lever to free the block 19 from the surface 20 whereupon the link 20 turns and frees the towing hook. The hook is so shaped that if the inclination of the tow rope increases, the rope will slip off the hook before the direction of the force it exerts passes through the pivot of. the hook. In a form described in the Provisional Specification the link turns in the opposite direction to free the hook and the recess in it faces the hook.
