Abstract
843,821. Combustion apparatus. BARICORDI, A. Jan. 14, 1957 [Jan. 13, 1956], No. 1403/57. Class 51 (1). A fuel/air mixture is caused to whirl in an inner chamber 12, Fig. 1, of a furnace by a motor-driven rotary impeller 10 throwing the mixture radially outwards on to an electricallyheated toothed annulus 11 which has apertures 7 and inclined ribs 15, Fig. 4, arranged to effect tangential whirl. The mixture is fed to the impeller centre 10a through an externallyheated tube 8 having conical baffles 8a and a spiral vane 7 about that part of the fuel supply pipe 6 which protrudes into the tube. The vane 7 causes the air-which is drawn into a pipe 2a by a fan P on the impeller shaft and passed through a preheater 4-to whirl prior to mixing with the fuel, which may be aerosol mixtures, heavy oils or pulverized coal. The hot whirling mixture enters a combustion chamber 23 through an electrically-heated nozzle 22 which may be rotatable. Mixture from the centre of the chamber 12 is recirculated through the annulus 11 by an impeller 15 and steam from an evaporator 28 is supplied to the mixture through valve-controlled inlets e ... i. The preheater 4 comprises a casing housing an electrically-heated oval tube a, Fig. 6, around which are placed plates b-each displaced angularly around the tube relative to its neighbourhaving holes c through which the air is blown on to the tube.
