Abstract

843,362. Extruding; drawing. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. Sept. 20, 1957 [Sept. 20, 19561, No. 29668/57. Class 83 (4). In a process for hot shaping metals or metal alloys by drawing or extruding, a metal blank is heated in a salt bath and coated with salts prior to feeding to the shaping tool, the salt being maintained on the surface of the metal before, during and after the shaping. A thorilun blank 16 is heated in a salt melt 17 to a temperature of 800‹ C. and is subsequently drawn through a die or dies submerged in the melt by drawing jaws 19. The wire product is subsequently further drawn. The drawing die which if submerged is of a hard metal or ceramal, may also be located above the surface of the melt in which case the wire product is preferably covered with salt melt by suitable means. Bars, channel-irons and tubes are extruded from U-section ingots preheated to 950 C. in a salt bath. The extrusion tool is also preheated in a muffle furnace to 750‹ C. approximately. A molybdenum lined ingot container 25 receives the heated ingot which is extruded through a die 23. During extrusion ladled into the channel 21 and is delivered through nozzles in passages 24 in a die holder 24 to cover the entire surface of the extruded article and thus prevent oxidation. Alternatively the salt may be poured on to the extruded metal at the extrusion outlet passage. The salt bath may contain chlorides, carbonates or phosphates particularly of the alkali metals or the alkaline earth metals. Other metals suitable for working by the process are uranium and its alloys and alloys of zirconium and chromium. Sheet, bar or wire products may be drawn or extruded according to the invention.
