Relates to a machine for taping containers 7 which are conveyed along a track so that each engages for initial adherence with adhesive tape 21 led from a spool 22 to a pivoted spring- urged tape guide arm 1 extending across the track, the tape being then cut off as the arm 1 is swung back by the advancing container to carry the tape against a fixed cutter 26. According to the invention, there is slidably mounted on one side of the track an anvil or abutment 10 against which the end of the tape is pressed by the end 8 of the guide arm 1. The arrangement is such that the anvil 10 means in a straight path for a limited distance while the end 8 of the guide arm moves in an arcuate path as the arm is swung back by an advancing container, so that the tape 21 is held under tension while the container engages in the bight or loop of the tape before the tape reaches and is cut by the cutter 26, by which time the anvil is arrested, the end 8 of the arm 1 has moved away from it and the portion of the tape adhering to the container can peel off its end from the anvil 10. The anvil 10 projects upwardly from a plate 11 having pins 12, 13 sliding in a slot 14 in the frame bar 6. A lever 15 pivoted at 16 is normally held by a spring 18 in contact with the guide arm 1 and has a slot 19 for the reception of a pin 20 on the plate 11. Thus the arm, 1 lever 15 and anvil 10 are moved simultaneously by the advancing container. The container 7 with the portion of tape adhering to it, is conveyed without rotating past rollers or other known means (not shown) by which the wrapping of the tape around the container is completed.
