Abstract
819,509. Applying sealing strips to packages. CHRISTENSSON, O. V. March 4, 1957 [March 13, 1956], No. 7082/57. Class 73 Relates to apparatus for applying sealing strips around three sides of packages fed in succession through the apparatus, the sealing strips being of the kind requiring moistening or coating with adhesive prior to application and the apparatus having no strip-feeding means, the movement of a package causing initial application of the strip to the package and consequent drawing of the strip from a reel. Aocording to the invention the moistening or coating means 33, Fig. 1 and the various strip guide rollers 21, 23, 25, 27, 29 are so arranged that the length of strip between the means 33 and the initial application roller 31 is at least the length required for application around the three sides of a package 10. As shown the apparatus is duplicated on the lower side of a guideway 15 through which the packages are moved by a conveyer 12, sealing strips being applied to the upper and lower sides of the package and around the edges thereof. The application roller 31 is mounted on an arm 35 pivoted on the same axis as the roller 29 and spring-urged towards the advancing packages. Rollers 43, 49 are also arranged in the path of the packages and are carried by spring-urged pivoted arms 41, 47 which are so counter-coupled by chain wheels 39, 45 and chains 51, 53 that rotation of one arm in one sense will cause an equal rotation of the other arm in the opposite sense. In operation the advancing package causes initial application of the strip to the front of the package and then along the upper side as shown in Fig. 3. At this point the package meets the roller 43 which is moved forwardly thus causing rearward movement of the roller 49 to permit passage of the package, the two rollers smoothing down the strip already applied by the roller 31 as shown in Fig. 5. The strip is then cut and on continued advance of the package 10 the trailing end of the strip is applied to the rear edge of the package by the roller 49 as shown in Fig. 7. Fig. 8 shows the apparatus in detail. In order to increase the length of strip between the moistening means 33 and the applying roller 31 in accordance with the package size, the moistening means 33 and roller 23 may be displaced on a support 62. A spring 73 is operated by the leading edge of the package passing through the apparatus to close an electrical contact 74 thus energizing a solenoid 75 to operate a cutting knife 78. The solenoid and knife are connected by a lever and link mechanism 82, 77, 85, 89. At the same time a brake 94 is operated against the roller 21 and the strip thereon.
