Abstract
312,969. Rose, W., and Rose Bros. (Gainsborough), Ltd. March 2, 1928. Packeting by wrapping-up. - In machines in which a succession of caramels, tablets, boxes, or other articles are fed up to a station at which they are thrust one at a time into wrapping, labelling, packing, or like machine, means are provided for stopping the wrapper or label feed in the event of an interruption of the supply of articles. The means comprise a clutch in operative connection with a detector mounted on a carrier for reciprocation to and from the charging station and movable in relation to the carrier for controlling the clutch. As shown, the articles 22, Fig. 11, are brought by a conveyer chain 41 into position between a reciprocating plunger 18 and a pocket formed by sides 11, 12 mounted in a wrapping wheel 10. The plunger advances and thrusts each article into the pocket, carrying with it a wrapper 21 fed by rollers 26, 27 and severed by a knife 23. The mechanism for detecting the presence or absence of an article and for controlling the feed of wrapping material accordingly comprises a pin 40, Fig. 3, extending through a bore in the plunger 18. In the event of an article being present in the path of the plunger, the pin is moved backwards relatively to the plunger and rotates a bell-crank lever 43 to move a rod 44 at right angles to the path of the plunger. This causes a pawl 46, Fig. 3, to come within the path of a detent 47, Figs. 3, 4 and 6, carried on one arm 48 of a three-armed lever 48 - - 50. The continued movement of the plunger, carrying with it the pawl in its extended position, rotates the detent 47, within the limits allowed by a pin and slot device 61, in a clockwise direction. The three-armed lever 48 - - 50 is oscillated in timed relationship with the plunger, and the detent having been rotated, an extension thereof 63 engages a fixed stop 65 and prevents a clutch throw-out device from operating. If no article is present, the pin 40 does not cause the detent to be rotated so that the extension 63 escapes the stop 65 as shown in Fig. 4 and allows the lever 48 to make a full movement, with the result that a roller 56, Figs. 5 and 6, is brought into engagement with a face cam 57 and disengages clutch members 30, 31 to arrest the feed of wrapping material. A rod 71 resets the pin 40 in position after each stroke and a stop 64 rotates the detent back into position at each reverse movement of the lever 48. If no article is present and the pin 40 engages the base 90, Fig. 11, of the pocket in the wrapping wheel, and causes the pawl to be advanced, it is by then clear of the detent and no interaction takes place.
