Abstract

Packeting by wrapping-up.-Machines adapted to apply wrappers to a succession of similar articles are provided with means for preventing the severance of a wrapper, &c., from a web if no article is in position to receive it. The articles 22, Fig. 8, are brought by a conveyer chain 41 into position between a reciprocating plunger 18 and a pocket formed by sides 11, 12 mounted in wrapping wheel 10. Normally, the plunger advances and thrusts each article into a pocket, carrying with it a wrapper 21 fed by rollers 26, 27 and severed by a knife 23. The mechanism for detecting to presence or absence of en article and for controlling the feed of wrapping material accordingly comprises a pin 40, Figs. 3 and 8, extending through a bore in the plunger 18. When an article is present in the path of the plunger, the pin is moved back relatively to the plunger during the advance of the latter, and rotates a bell-crank lever 43 to move a rod 44 at right angles to the travel of the plunger. This causes a pawl 46 on the rod 44 to come into engagement with a roller 57, Figs. 3 and 4. The roller is mounted on one end of a. two-armed lever 55, pivoted at 56, and formed at the other end as a catch 58 engaging a stop 60 on the knife 23. The presence of an article at the charging station thus causes the parts 46, 57 to engage and to free the knife to make a cutting stroke. The knife is mounted on a vertical pivot 50 and is operated by a face-cam 53, spring 54 and arm 51. If no article is present, the pawl 46 is not advanced to engage the roller 57 and the knife cannot operate. If the detector pin 40 contacts with the part 90 of the wrapping wheel, the pawl 46 is advanced too late to engage the roller 57. The parts are re-set at each backward stroke of the plunger by fixed arms. The detector mechanism may also control wrapper-feeding apparatus such as is described in Specification 312,969.
