A horizontal buckstay carried by the vertical tubes of a furnace of heat-exchanger wall on spaced supports which allow the thermal expansion of the wall longitudinally of the buckstay is connected to the wall by a link pivoted to the wall and to the buckstay, so that rotation of the link accommodates the expansion. The tubes 10 of a furnace wall are connected by tie-bars 15 welded to the tubes and horizontal I-section buckstays 19 are carried by C-shaped brackets 22, Fig. 3, secured to mounting-plates 24 welded to the tubes. Corner brackets 32 are welded to the tie-bars 15, and a plate 28 is welded to each end of the buckstays 19. Links 30 are pivoted to the corner brackets 32 and the plates 28 so that the inner ends of the links on each buckstay are closer together than the outer ends when the furnace is cold, but the links move through the parallel position to have the inner ends farther apart than the outer ends when the furnace is hot. The C-shaped support brackets 22 allow a slight movement of the buckstay 19 perpendicular to the wall to permit the rotation of the links 30. In a modification, Fig. 6, imperforate tube walls 111 carry channel members 123, each welded to adjacent tube walls. Plates 124 welded to the channels members are connected to L-shaped projections 125 which engage the I-section buckstay. Corner castings 114 embrace a pair of adjacent corner tubes, and slotted angle-plates 117 are bolted to the corner castings 114 so as to allow for differential vertical expansion. The corner brackets 119 are welded to the angle-plates 117 and the inner ends of the links 120 are pivoted to the brackets 119.
