Abstract

818,028. Tubular heat exchangers; steam superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. July 9, 1957 [July 10, 1956], No. 21725/57. Classes 64(3) and 123(3) In a cross-flow tubular heat exchanger in which steam or other vapour or other fluid flowing through the tubes is heated by a fluid such as hot gas flowing over the tubes, a group of parallel-connected vertically aligned horizontal tubes are united to form a beam which is supported at its ends. In the form shown the heat exchanger is arranged in a vertical gas pass leading from a furnace. A tube platen is formed by two parallel-connected sinuous tubes intercalated as shown in Fig. 1 and neighbouring straight portions e.g. 20, 22 of the two tubes are united in pairs by welding with metallic spacer members e.g. 24, 25, 26 interposed therebetween, each such united pair forming a beam. Neighbouring beams are interconnected by sliding joints which permit relative expansion longitudinally and each joint comprises metallic sleeves 80, 82 (see Figs. 4, 5), welded to the lower tube of a beam the bore of the sleeves being aligned with a similar sleeve 86 welded to the upper tube of an adjacent beam. A rod is welded in the bore of sleeve 86 and is slidable in the sleeve 80, 82. Support for the ends of the beams is provided by brackets such as 104, 108, 121 and 123 carried by tubes 28, 30 lining the gas pass and by saddle members such as 101, 103, 105, 107 welded to one beam and . slidable in an adjacent beam. The lowermost beams are supported by stirrup members 114, 126 pivotally secured to the next upper beam. Tiles 32, 51 at the top of the platen prevent by-passing of the tubes by the heating gases. The heat exchanger may comprise a plurality of platens adjacent platens being spaced apart by lugs such as 38.
