An ankle supporting appliance comprises a laminated spring 4 detachably secured, at its lower end, to a foot supporting plate 1 and, at its upper end 12 to a band 10 which passes around the leg. The lower end of the spring preferably fits into a socket 8 on a supporting arm 2 and is secured therein by a wedge 9, while, at its upper end, it engages tightly in a cup-shaped attachment 11. If desired, a further rigid extension may be fitted between the upper end of the spring and the band 10 and the band itself may be firmly secured to the leg, if necessary, by a strap which closes its adjacent ends 18, 19. When the appliance is in use the plate 1 is worn between the sole of the foot and the shoe.
