Abstract

841,950. Making bellows; corrugating. RADLEY, W. E. (Solar Aircraft Co.). Aug. 3, 1956, No. 24020/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] A polyhedral expansible tubular unit, Fig. 11, such as an expansion joint, has a number of walls 22, 24, Fig. 3, with identical longitudinal corrugated surfaces 25 and bevelled end edges, the edges of adjoining walls lying in contact on a common plane and being secured together at 37, such as by welding. Upper and lower flanges 26, 30, may be provided and in one embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), these flanges lie inside the corrugations. For a joint having four walls the edges are bevelled at 45 degrees and for one with six walls the edges are bevelled at 30 degrees. Two adjoining wall sections 22, 24 are pressed together between dies 33, 35, Fig. 7, to form the identical corrugations and after separation the ends are bevelled. Alternatively the corrugations may be formed by rolling. The upper and lower wall flanges are welded to angle-sections 48, 46, Fig. 13, to which are secured swivel plates 62, 64 and 74, respectively, with pivot-pins 78 enabling the upper part of the joint to pivot. A liner 80 provides for flow of fluid in an upward direction only. In another embodiment, Figs. 16, 22 (not shown), the corrugated walls are two-ply except at the corners and extra supports 134, Figs. 16, 19 (not shown), are used to limit bulging of the walls. Specific dimensions of the corrugations are given in one example.
