Abstract

1465732 Joining pipes to walls CARLZEISS STIFTUNG trading as [JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 10 July 1974 [11 Feb 1974] 30622/74 Heading F2G [Also in Division F4] In a shell and tube heat exchanger intended for use with corrosive fluids and comprising a plurality of tubes 6, preferably of glass, extending between tube end plates 1, each tube end is sealed into a respective bore of a tube plate by means of a packing or sealing cord 8 of uniaxially expanded and oriented polytetrafluoroethylene held in place by a threaded bush 5. The bush is formed at its end with a bevel 7 which urges the packing 8 into sealing contact with the tube and with a shoulder portion 3 which may either be straight, (Fig. 3b, not shown), or bevelled, as shown. The bushes 5 and the tube plates 1 are made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
