841,814. Door operating-appliances. MUIRHEAD, L. A. Sept. 25, 1958, No. 30632/58. Class 65(1). A garage door is operated by a pair of springs, one for opening and one for closing the door, of such relative strengths that opening the door by means of one spring supplies potential energy for closing the door by the other. The sequence of operations is open door manually, close door mechanically, open door mechanically and close door manually, so that there is no need to leave a non-garaged car to operate the door. Adjustable bell cranks 16, 17, 19, 20 are connected by links 1A, 2A to the doors 1, 2 and by links 15, 18 to arms 6, 14 commonly pivoted at 7. Arms 10, 23 are also pivoted at 7 and are acted on by springs 13, 24 respectively. The ends of arms 10, 23 engage in spring pressed ratchet arms 8, 22 respectively. Arm 6 carries a part 5 moving under the control of a Bowden cable or hydraulic means longitudinally outwards of arm 6 and designed to move the adjacent ratchet arm away from the arm 10 or 23 with which it is engaged. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus before the first operation. Manually opening the doors swings the arms 6, 14 to rest against arm 10. The doors are then closed by operation of e.g. lever 3 which moves part 5 against ratchet arm 8, releasing arm 10 which under the action of spring 13 swings over, carrying with it arms 6, 14 to rest on arm 23 (Fig. 4). Operation of control 3 then releases arm 23 from ratchet 22 and spring 24 acting against spring 13 swings arm 23, together with arms 6, 14 and 10, over against arm 8, causing arm 10 to engage with ratchet arm 8. Thus the doors are opened and simultaneously spring 13 is tensioned for mechanically closing the doors. Finally the doors are manually closed and arms 6, 14 are swung to the position shown in Fig. 1.
