Abstract

Copolymers of conjugated drying oil-modified alkyd resins and aromatic vinyl monomers and/or methacrylate esters are obtained by adding the alkyd resin, the unsaturated monomer and the polymerization catalyst stepwise and simultaneously to a solvent medium heated to the polymerization temperature. Alkyd resins specified are those obtained by modifying phthalic anhydride-glycerin alkyds with castor oil, which may be used alone or in admixture with a soya bean oil partial glyceride or rosin, tung oil and isomerised drying oils. Monomers specified are styrene, vinyl toluene and lower alkyl methacrylates. Catalysts specified are tert-butyl and cumene hydroperoxides, di-tert-butyl peroxide and azodiisobutyronitrile. Solvents specified are toluene, xylene and mesitylene which may contain a proportion of mineral spirits or, in the case of vinyl toluene, may be entirely replaced by mineral spirits. The solvent may initially contain a minor proportion of an alkyd resin which may or may not be the same as the alkyd resin added subsequently. Also present during polymerization may be modifiers such as mercaptans, chlorinated hydrocarbons and terpenes, e.g. dipentene.
