841,610. Purifying gases containing hydrogen sulphide. KOPPERS G.m.b.H., H. July 18, 1956 [Sept. 14, 1955], No. 22246/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 55 (2). In a process of removing hydrogen sulphide from coal distillation gas containing a small amount of free oxygen, the gas is scrubbed under pressure, e.g. 5 atm., with alkaline absorbent solution containing as a catalyst a hydroxy- or polyhydroxybenzene compound in such an amount that the absorbed hydrogen sulphide is wholly or almost wholly oxidized to form sulphur by the free oxygen in the gas being scrubbed, the solution being withdrawn from the scrubber and filtered under reduced pressure to remove the sulphur before being returned to the scrubber. A regeneration of the solution with air may be necessary outside the scrubber if the free oxygen content of the gas is insufficient to effect complete oxidation of the absorbed hydrogen sulphide. The amount of catalyst in the solution may be from 1.5-2.5 gm./litre.
