Abstract
841,367. Vehicle lamps. CIBIE, P. July 3, 1957 [Nov. 21, 1956], No. 21079/57. Classes 39(2), 75(2) and 75(4). A lamp more particularly for motor vehicles comprises a light source surrounded by an inner reflector of small apparent area as viewed from in front on which most of the light falls and which is provided with windows behind which are arranged portions of a reflector of larger apparent area. The reflectors may be parts of surfaces of paraboloids of revolution which may be co-axial or not and may have a common focus or not. In the form shown, the lamp bulb 1 is surrounded by a reflector 2 having windows 4 for illumination of a larger reflector 3. The outer reflector may be in the form of a horizontal strip of size large enough to receive the light flux from the windows 4. It may also extend only on one side of the lamp, a window being provided in the inner reflector only on this side. The windows in the inner reflector may extend completely across or may be formed by notches extending inwards from the outer edges. The outer reflector 3 may also have windows for illumination of a further reflector arranged outside it. The inner reflector may be arranged to produce a dipped beam and the outer reflector a long range beam, the windows then being provided with shutters to enable the change over to be effected by closing the shutters. In a sealed beam headlamp, the filament may be surrounded by a window reflector of small aperture, the rear part of the headlamp forming the outer reflector. In a further modification, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), the inner reflector may be produced by applying a reflecting coating to the bulb itself, blank areas being left in this coating to form the windows.
