Abstract

841,067. Filters. WHITAKER Ltd., R. G. Oct. 8, 1958 [Nov. 25, 1957], No. 36660/57. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVIII] A filter comprises a casing 1 divided into two compartments 3 and 4 by a partition 5 and closed at each end by lids or covers 2. One or more filter units 8 are mounted on the partition 5 and extend into the compartment 4. Each filter unit comprises a coil spring 10 secured at each end to plugs 11 and 12 respectively which are connected by a spindle 13 slidably through the plug 12 and threaded through the plug 11 whereby the gaps between the coil can be adjusted. The spindle 13 carries stops 14, 16 to limit the movement of the plug 12 and is supported on a rod 15 extending across the compartment 4. The filter units are clamped in position by screw members 23 carried by bars 21 which are removably mounted in the compartment 3 such that rotation of the screw 23 abuts the filter element and presses the flange 19 of plug 11 against the partition 5. Liquid to be filtered enters at 6 and flows through the filter and ducts in the plugs 11 to the compartment 3 and the filtrate is discharged through outlet 9. To clear the filters, the lid 2 of the compartment 3 is opened and the bars 21 carrying the screws 23 removed, the filter elements can then be withdrawn through the holes in the partition until the flange 25 on the plug 12 engages the partition. The axial movement of the plug 12 on the spindle allows the spring coil 10 to be stretched. When distillation of the sludge is to take place a heating jacket 26 is provided and steam is admitted to the compartment 4 through an inlet 27.
