Abstract

840,530. Reels for cables &c. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and ARNOLD, G. H. Dec. 4, 1958 [Dec. 4, 1957], No. 37763/57. Class 99(2). A portable reel arrangement comprises a reel or drum 1 on which cable, wire, rope or the like may be wound, a framework including a carrying handle 7 and within which or on the reel is mounted, a friction brake 8, 11 normally arranged to prevent rotation of the reel, and means disposed adjacent the handle for releasing the brake to allow rotation of the reel. When the device is lifted by the handle the means for releasing the brake may be operated, whilst, if that means has been operated, release of the handle causes the brake to be re-applied so that if the reel or drum is rotating the latter is progressively braked to rest. As shown, the wood reel 1 is mounted in a frame of aluminium tubing formed of parallel, spaced apart members 3 joined by members 4. Mounted externally of one face of the reel is an annular member 8 of bronze and generally V-shaped in crosssection, a wedge-shaped part 11 of cast iron being urged by a spring 12 between the arms of the " V " of the member 8 ; the part 11 is secured to a slidable member 10 actuated by a lever 13 pivoted within the tubular handle 7 and connected to and operated by a lever 15 pivoted on the handle. The inner end of a cable 2 wound on the reel is connected to a terminal block mounted at one end of the reel axle 5, and rewinding of the cable is provided for by a foldable handle 17 attached to the other end of the axle.
