Abstract

840,323. Granulating metals. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. Jan. 9, 1958 [Jan. 16, 1957], No. 1707/57. Class 82(1) Metal powder is made by introducing a stream of molten metal into a high velocity gas stream, the gas having a temperature of 40‹C. or less. In the particular embodiment, copper-lead powder is made by disintegrating a molten 70/30 copper-lead mixture with Town gas. Suitable apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 and comprises a gas compressor 18, a gas cooler 19, a nozzle 13 in which the gas is allowed to expand and from which it issues as a high velocity stream, and tundish 14 from which, through an aperture in its base, the stream of molten metal falls in front of the nozzle. Solidified metal powder is collected in receptacle 17, and gas leaves blowing chamber 10 through port 16 and is returned to the inlet side of compressor 18. Gas cooler 19 is in the form of a power absorbing expansion motor such as a turbine. According to the Provisional Specification, the gas cooler may be a heat exchanger.
