The oscillating handle of a hand-operated calculating or like machine is uncoupled from the main operating shaft during its forward stroke, during which a spring is tensioned which on completion of that stroke drives the main operating shaft at a speed independent of the speed of actuation of the handle. The handle 3, on being moved clockwise rotates a sector 12 counter-clockwise through a hook 8 which engages a stud 11 in the sector. A spring 15 is thus tensioned and a pinion 17 rotatable on the main operating shaft 18 is rotated through one revolution. At the end of the clockwise stroke of the handle 3, a slide 25 is moved from the path of an arm 24 on the shaft 18 and a lug 14 depresses the hook 8 so as to free the sector 12 for return movement during which it drives the pinion 17 counterclockwise. The pinion 17 is arranged, by means of a tooth 23 co-operating with a hole in a disc 20 fast on the shaft 18, to drive the latter but only when rotated in the counterclockwise direction. Thus, its initial movement is idle but the return movement under the action of the spring 15 is effective to rotate the shaft 18 which is freed by the slide 25 and then arrested after one revolution by that slide which is restored to the position shown by the sector 12. The handle in this embodiment has its own return spring 9 but in a modification is permanently coupled to the sector 12 by a link. The sector 12 may also drive through a oneway clutch device a centrifugal brake 37 which is effective during the return (driving) stroke of the sector 12.
