Abstract

In the manufacture of a shell mould (see Group XXII) by the lost wax process the wax is heated rapidly in a furnace at a temperature between 750 DEG C. and 1150 DEG C. to allow a portion of the wax adjacent the mould to be removed before the wax expands and distorts the mould. A wax pattern is dipped in a slip containing powdered silica or high silica glass and fine ball clay suspended in a vehicle comprising a coagulant such as tartaric acid, a water-soluble gum such as gum arabic, colloidal silica, and a wetting agent of tartaric acid, such as sodium dioctylsulphosuccinate. Zircon, alumina, calcined fire clay, and sillimanite can also be used in the slip. After tipping, the wax pattern is allowed to drain and is sprinkled with pulverized fused silica or high silica glass and is then allowed to dry for one hour at room temperature. The pattern may be subsequently dipped and dried five times to build up the desired thickness. For the subsequent slip the ball clay may be omitted and the tartaric acid and gum arabic replaced by an aqueous solution of methyl cellulose. The pulverised silica which is sprinkled on the slip may be coarser towards the outside of the mould. The mould may be sintered simultaneously with removal of the wax pattern. Specification 442,526 is referred to.
