Abstract

A ceramic core for a metal or alloy casting mould is formed by vibrating directly into a core channel of a wax pattern of a mould to gel and set in situ, a slurry of graded crushed fused silica e.g. 700 gms. 90 mesh B.S.S. with 300 gms. 200 mesh B.S.S. and 2,5 gms. calcined mangesia, with one or more alkyl silicates e.g. 300 ml of a liquid resulting from the addition of 150 ml of 1% W/W hydrochloric acid to 750 ml polymeric ethyl silicate or isopropyl silicate containing 40-43% silica. After setting at room temperature the wax pattern and core are invested and oven dried to melt the wax when the core may be impregnated with further hydrolysed alkyl silicate prior to fusing. The core may be cast around fused silica rods, fibres or tubes.
