Abstract

841,873. Moulding-processes. HERZMARK, N. May 17,1957 [April 25, 1957], No. 15747/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (1). Investment moulds are made by applying to the pattern several superposed layers of a refractory slurry comprising an alkali-metalsilicate, each layer being individually sanded with a dry refractory sand, and the first three or more layers being made insoluble by exposure to an acid gaseous atmosphere such as CO 2 , or the fumes of HCl or HNO 3 and the last layer or two layers being made insoluble by dehydration of the silicate. The mould is dried at a temperature of between 35-45‹C., and preheated, for introduction of the metal, for one hour at 800-900‹ C. In a modification, the inside layers are hardened by a gaseous atmosphere, and the last layer or layers are hardened by dipping into an inflammable solvent such as alcohol, acetone or di-oxane, which is then burnt off. Alternatively the final two layers may be hardened by exposure to a temperature of between 250-850‹ C. for a period of 30-60 seconds. Specification 823,884 is referred to.
