Abstract

A cast-forming bandage comprises a fabric supporting a dry composition of 5-30% of uncured aminoplast resin and 95-70% of plaster of Paris, based on the total weight of the resin and plaster of Paris, and 2.5-30% of resin curing catalyst, the catalyst being dispersed in polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 5000-7000, to form globules and coating 10-40% of the area of the bandage. The aminoplast resin, plaster of Paris, a plasticizer, a retarder or accelerator and a binder are mixed to an aqueous paste, spread on cotton gauze and dried. The catalyst is sprayed on the resulting bandage. The aminoplast resin chosen which may be amino-triazine formaldehyde or melamine formaldehyde, is water-soluble and water-dispersible but may be cured to a hard resistant state. Plasticizers used are glycerols, glycols or polyglycols and the retarders used are soluble citrates, phosphates or acetates. The catalyst may be ammonium chloride in polyethylene glycol. Binders, which are used to effect maximum adhesion of the paste to the gauze, may be polyvinyl acetate emulsions or emulsions or solutions of polymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylates, methacrylates or butadiene. Specification 751,799 is referred to.
